Explain this …

Here is NFL referee Clete Blakeman explaning why the penalty at the end of last night’s game between the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers was not in fact a penalty:

So it was determined at that point in time that when the primary contact occurred on the tight end that the ball, in essence, was coming in underthrown and in essence it was [immediately] at that point intercepted at the front end of the end zone. So there was a determination that, in essence, uncatchability, that the ball was intercepted at or about the same time the primary contact against the receiver occurred.

But wasn’t Tom Brady’s pass, in essence, “uncatchable” precisely because of the defensive player’s interference with the tight end?

Hey, I understand that a lot of people don’t like Tom Brady (envy?), but independent of one’s personal opinion of the man, can you blame him for getting angry in this situation?

I do,not think it was a pass interference as much as it was obviously defensive holding, which would not need the ball to be catchable in order to be called.

Regardless of pass interference or defense holding, there was in fact a penalty on the final play. There is always the theory to not allow the refs to dictate the result of a game and as a result refs are prone to not make a penalty call if it is a close call to determine whether it is a penalty at the very end of the game in the 4th quarter. This is similar to the idea refs lets the players play in the playoffs of the NBA which leads to more physical play. But for this play this is besides the fact and their was clear evidence there was a penalty. Which penalty can be debate but if you watch the replay the player was impeded to be able to catch the ball because the defender had his arms hovered around Gronks body. The arms were necessarily holding Gronk down so hard where it forced him to the ground, but the defender arms blocked him enough from being able to make a move to make a play and catch the ball. As a result of the lack of a call which essentially decided the outcome of the game, I understand where Tom Brady is coming from for cursing. However, Brady should have used better judgement though, knowing he may be on national television at any given moment since the game was broadcasted on Monday Night Football.
