Having harbored a long-time love-hate relationship with Nancy/Ernie Bushmiller, along with admiration for Douglas Hofstadter, I particularly enjoyed this effort.
I am a big fan of DH but check out this critique of his work: http://numerocinqmagazine.com/2010/07/01/godel-hofstadter-the-self-an-essay-by-adam-westra/
I read Strange Loop a long time ago and was disappointed — my critique of it doesn’t go to anywhere near the depth of that in the link you shared; rather, I thought Strange Loop was unfocused, somewhat self-indulgent and therefore badly in need of a stronger editor. Of course, I was hoping for a close follow-up to GEB and Metamagical Themas, but that’s like hoping that a new cartoonist would take over Nancy and draw and write it in the same style as Ernie Bushmiller.
