Travel update: Tokyo

I am attending this year’s meeting of the International Adam Smith Society at Waseda University in Tokyo this week — here is a link to this year’s program; my talk on “Die Adam Smith Probleme” is scheduled for the afternoon of Monday, March 11 — so I will be blogging less frequently, if at all, in the days ahead.

  1. Best of luck to you! Are any of the lectures being recorded?

    • thanks; it’s a shame none of the talks are being recorded and will be lost to time … like so many tears in the rain!

      • I think they should record them. I believe asked you this last year and the same issue came.

For the sake of promoting Adam Smith, they should just upload the symposium to Youtube or Spotify (podcast format)in an audio format.

It sounds like you received some great feedback. I am sure you killed it!

      • Also, did you have a chance to enjoy any Japanese single malts while you were there?

Scotch is great and all, but Japan has the Scots beat at their own game.

      • absolutely, and they are just as good as the ones in Scotland!

      • I really enjoy Akashi (single malt), Nikka Coffey grain whisky (grain), Hibiki harmony (blend), and Ohishi Whiskey Sherry Cask (rice whiskey?).

But for something budget friendly and readily available; Suntory Toki (Blend)

I would actually say better than scotch. They only thing is that if you are looking for some that is peaty; Japan doesn’t quite deliver.

But they can outperform both the Highlands, Lowlands, and Speyside regions any day of the week.

But for smokey single malts, I am still reaching for Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Talisker and Highland Park (smokey/ briny finish).

Bowmore is little meh for the price tag. Laphroaig beats it any day of the week.

Forget Lagavulin (sorry Ron Swanson).I tried it at fancy steakhouse nine years ago; over priced and overrated. It was no better than Bowmore. Both left me underwhelmed.

Moral of the story, Japan makes great whisk(e)y.
