Question rarely asked

Why do I even need an ID (i.e. internal passport) at all to travel inside my own country? Bonus question: How many more erosions of liberty (anti-smoking rules, seat belt laws, etc.) before we stop being a “free” country?

  1. I agree the Real ID requirement is a of BS. Your comment regarding the erosion of our liberties made me think about the “ratchet effect”. How the pretext of national emergency expanses the authority of the government and reduces our liberties.

The concept of the Real ID is hangover from the “War on Terror”, but finds relevance amid the immigration crisis.

    • *** is a bunch of BS.
      ** expands

    • The worst part is that it doesn’t even matter who is in power — case in point: we still have to take off our shoes in the airport!!

      • Agreed. I’d rather risk the slim chance of a terrorist attack than get molested by a TSA agent.

That’s exactly it. With the “ratchet effect”, government authority never decreases , it only gets expanded with every episodic pretext justifying the need for more government intervention.
