To mark the 250th anniversary of the publication of The Wealth of Nations (9 March 1776) and Adam Smith’s timeless defense of natural liberty, I am reposting Shervin Hajipour’s haunting anthem “Baraye”, which he composed in response to his government’s brutal repression of the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests in Iran. As the child of Cuban refugees, the lyrics of this poetic protest song really resonate with me. May the sons and daughters of Cuba and Iran both be free of their religious and secular tyrants soon!
