In honor of Flag Day (14 June), we are reposting our “Flag for Mars” blog post of 5 September 2017.
Why don’t any of the planets or moons in our solar system have their own flags? Calder Hansen proposes a new flag for Mars. More information about this proposed Martian flag is available here. Hat tip: kottke. [Update (14 June 2019): There is some controversy as to the actual origins of the design for the flag for Mars. See the comments section and here.]

the link about the controversy no longer works and the website it goes to still has Calder Hansen tagged in the 2018 seminar article and they still have a 2020 article by him about online friends up on their site as well, it seems to me there is nothing suggesting he stole the design as the commenter on the original post thought maybe?
Followup to my other comment, the comment on the original post on this website claiming Calder Hansen used the design without permission also said it was designed in 2018 and the original post on this website is from 2017 so how could that even work?
Thanks for the update. I will investigate and report back soon!
