Putting aside porn sites and the dark web, are we not living in an Internet “golden age” of ideas and information? Here are just a few of the excellent essays and Wikipedia entries that I randomly stumbled upon this semester:
- When the Worst Man in the World Writes a Masterpiece by Alvaro de Menard (22 Oct. 2020).
- Covid-19 as a Ramsey tax problem by Tyler Cowen (4 December 2020).
- On biology by James Sommers (recent but not dated, as far as I can tell).
- How I made a self-quoting tweet by Oisin Moran (ditto).
- Hanlon’s razor, via Wikipedia.
I will check out the links. In terms of internet depravity I believe you forgot social media. It can be a powerful tool. It’s value can cut both ways. It can also be used for destructive purposes.
Excellent point. I was on Instagram for all of four days: I loved the chess websites but Facebook’s algorithm also kept recommending a bunch of accounts of beautiful European models
I wasn’t thinking of that. I had cyber bullying and trolling in mind. That could also be problematic.
good points! Let’s just say that the problem has many dimensions!
