In the judicial system, there is an “appeals process”. I don’t know of any US sports league — except the PGA — that has a process that has ever overturned the outcome of a game, even if (on paper) it would be capable of doing so.
The accounts I have read suggest that the Lions “reported” their players properly, but the officials inaccurately “announced” the eligible players. I don’t have access to the appendix of the NFL rulebook, but I’m guessing the chapter on “refs screwing up” is pretty short.
