We interrupt our extended review of “Natural law and natural rights” (we will hit Ch. III tomorrow) to take this opportunity to agree with our friend and colleague Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, that today (May 1st) should officially be declared Victims of Communism Day. Also, here is a listing of ten films that dramatize the costs of communism. Let us never forget how ambitious and charismatic men inspired by an evil and odious dogma flouted the due process and property rights of their fellow citizens in the name of the greater good. The larger lesson is this: James Madison was right: men are not angels. Checks and balances and a separation of competing powers are essential features of a well-ordered polis.

If not for communism, I would not have met my husband. In 1948 when he was 2 yrs, his mother escaped Czechoslovakia by carrying him on her back, his brother (1 yr) on her front and held his sister (8 yr) by the hand. His father fled before them. All this because his father who had already survived years in a Nazi concentration camp was going to be arrested because he was a leader in the Agrarian Party and refused to join the communist party. They were refugees in Europe for a period of years before being granted asylum to the US. They considered citizenship a privilege and an honor. Thank god the political situation in this country toward immigrants back then was not like it is today.
I have conflicted feelings as well, for if it were not for Communism, my parents would have never met, and I would never have been born!
Sometimes in life what seems like the worst thing that could happen, turns out to be the best thing that happened.

This is post is from last, so disregard the reference to my review of “Natural law and natural rights,” which I wrote up last year. The rest of this post, however, captures exactly how I feel about “May Day” and leftist do-gooders generally.
